Data Sources

The providers behind the numbers, and what each one is used for. Modules without a connected provider are marked as Sample Data.

Last updated:

Connected providers

  • FRED (Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis) — Brent, WTI, Henry Hub, US diesel, Dollar Index, US 10Y, Fed Funds.
  • EIA (US Energy Information Administration) — crude and product inventories, refinery and product series.
  • AISStream — live vessel positions and chokepoint activity, when an API key is configured.
  • GDELT — global news and event monitoring for crisis, shipping and refinery headlines.
  • OpenStreetMap / CARTO — base map tiles for the mapping modules.

Not currently licensed

Assessed spot prices from commercial price reporting agencies, term freight assessments and proprietary LNG indices are not part of the platform today. Any screen that resembles such content is a sample structure.

Licensing and redistribution rights

Below is the licence basis on which each connected provider is used. Where a licence forbids redistribution of raw values, NetbackBeacon shows derived or delayed views only.

  • FRED — U.S. federal government data served through the St. Louis Fed API. Free for commercial and non-commercial use with attribution; individual series may carry the copyright of the original source, so series-level values are shown with the FRED series ID and observation date.
  • EIA — U.S. Energy Information Administration open data. U.S. government works are public domain; the API requires a registered key and attribution to EIA.
  • AISStream — free tier for non-commercial and evaluation use under the provider's terms; positions are displayed live and stored only as aggregated history. Raw AIS feeds are not redistributed or offered for download.
  • GDELT — GDELT Project open data, free to use with attribution. Only headline metadata (title, source domain, timestamp, URL) is stored; full article text is never copied.
  • OpenStreetMap — map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under ODbL. Tiles are served by CARTO under their tile usage policy; attribution is rendered on every map.
  • Our World in Data — CC BY 4.0; charts and derived series carry the OWID attribution and the source dataset name.

What "Live" means on this platform

NetbackBeacon does not claim real-time or exchange-grade market data. "Live" on a card means the value was pulled from a connected provider on the cadence below, and every card carries its own observation timestamp.

  • FRED and EIA benchmarks — refreshed hourly into the canonical store; underlying series are themselves published daily or weekly with the provider's own lag.
  • Cockpit and market snapshot tiles — served from the canonical store, so the value shown is at most one refresh cycle old.
  • AIS vessel positions — streamed live when a key is configured, with a user-selectable refresh interval (10s / 30s / 60s); when the stream is unavailable the map falls back to the last stored positions and says so.
  • News headlines — GDELT queries cached for 5 minutes and served stale for up to 1 hour if the provider is unreachable.
  • Historical Replay — archived observations only. Values are never recomputed from live data unless a step is explicitly labelled as a live re-price.
  • Freight, scenario and compass outputs — model results computed from the inputs above using documented assumptions, not assessed market rates.

Attribution and terms

Each provider's data remains subject to that provider's own terms of use. NetbackBeacon redistributes derived and aggregated views only, and does not resell, sublicense or provide bulk export of any third-party feed.

If a provider changes its terms in a way that conflicts with the above, the affected module is switched to Sample Data until a compliant path is available.

Details will be published before commercial launch.
